More evidence of why German Shepherds rule

So cool!

Reduce, reuse, recycle

I have to say, when I have to buy a plastic bottle of some kind I try to reuse it as many times as possible... and/or recycle it. I never buy the multi-pack of single serve water or soda... it's such a waste! I have my own reusable water bottle, and so should everyone! This beach in Hawaii is literally turning into plastic from all of the plastic trash that floats to it. The sand there is mostly bits of plastic. Ew! So bad... check it out here on BBC News

Of course I had to blog this

So I've been a little busy...

Feeling bad about not blogging for such a long time! It may have something to do with the fact that I drove over 3,000 miles in the past week. I've been through New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, California, and now I'm in Seattle, Washington. Whew. Pictures should be coming soon!

I think the craziest sight was in Iowa. Ashley and I had no idea that there were tornado warnings in Iowa when we got there. We had driven for a while and decided to finally stop outside of Iowa City after much debate on whether we should have kept going. When we got going the next day, we drove about twenty minutes away from Iowa City and saw about four 18 wheelers and two RV's completely flipped on their sides on the side of the highway. We even recognized passing a few of them on our way through Iowa the night before. We eventually found out that the tornadoes had created 100 mph wind gusts that were blowing trucks and RV's off the road. Thankfully we stopped when we did or it could have been pretty hazardous for us!

Love it

The New York Times had a great article by Op-Ed columnist Bob Herbert the other day about the complete lack of class in the GOP and I love it! You should check it out here!!!

"For decades the G.O.P. has been the party of fear, ignorance and divisiveness. All you have to do is look around to see what it has done to the country. The greatest economic inequality since the Gilded Age was followed by a near-total collapse of the overall economy. As a country, we have a monumental mess on our hands and still the Republicans have nothing to offer in the way of a remedy except more tax cuts for the rich. This is the party of trickle down and weapons of mass destruction, the party of birthers and death-panel lunatics. This is the party that genuflects at the altar of right-wing talk radio, with its insane, nauseating, nonstop commitment to hatred and bigotry."

Another thing to worry about when jogging...

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — The kit-built single-engine plane was gliding quietly as it came down for an emergency landing on a beach. Pharmaceutical salesman Robert Gary Jones, listening to his iPod while jogging, likely never saw or heard it before the aircraft hit him from behind Monday evening and killed him.

"There's no noise," said aviation expert Mary Schiavo, a former inspector general for the National Transportation Safety Board. "So the jogger, with his ear buds in, and the plane without an engine, you're basically a stealth aircraft. Who would expect to look up?"

The 38-year-old Jones, whose mother said he was serious about nutrition and exercise, especially jogging, was on a business trip to Hilton Head for GlaxoSmithKline. He was looking forward to getting home to the northern Atlanta suburb of Woodstock, Ga., for his daughter's third birthday Wednesday, Pauline Jones said.

"I was never so shocked in all my life," she said of learning the news, her voice shaking. "They say that God only gives you what you can handle. I said, 'You know what, I've reached my max.'"

The pilot, Edward I. Smith of Chesapeake, Va., and his lone passenger walked away from the crash landing near the Hilton Head Marriott Resort and Spa. The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office named the passenger as David Henry, 59, also of Chesapeake, The Island Packet newspaper reported.

Smith was on the beach Tuesday, when the four-seater aircraft was hoisted onto a trailer hitched to a pickup truck and towed away.

"I've got a lot of issues going on right now," Smith said. "I've got a plane that's all torn up. And I've got a young man that I killed."

The Lancair IV-P aircraft had lost its propeller, with oil smeared all over its windshield, making visibility difficult, authorities said. It was "basically gliding" when it instantly killed Jones, said Ed Allen, the coroner for Beaufort County on the South Carolina coast.

The plane took off from Orlando, Fla., at 4:45 p.m. Monday and was en route to Virginia when it started leaking oil at about 13,000 feet, said Joheida Fister, spokeswoman for Hilton Head Island fire and rescue.

National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Keith Holloway said no cause had been determined. He said the plane would be inspected in Virginia and that investigators would interview the pilot and any witnesses.

"We don't know what occurred, especially since we haven't actually examined the aircraft," Holloway said. "We are still gathering facts."

A Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman referred inquiries to the NTSB.

Even with oil smeared on the windshield, Schiavo, the former NTSB official, said Smith should have been able to see through a small window on the side of the plane and possibly yell out to anyone below. Still, there may have been little time to try to avoid hitting the jogger, she said.

Tanning beds now listed among top cancer risks

This really is no surprise...

LONDON (AP) — International cancer experts have moved tanning beds and other sources of ultraviolet radiation into the top cancer risk category, deeming them as deadly as arsenic and mustard gas.

For years, scientists have described tanning beds and ultraviolet radiation as "probable carcinogens."

A new analysis of about 20 studies concludes the risk of skin cancer jumps by 75% when people start using tanning beds before age 30. Experts also found that all types of ultraviolet radiation caused worrying mutations in mice, proof the radiation is carcinogenic. Previously, only one type of ultraviolet radiation was thought to be lethal.

The new classification means tanning beds and other sources of ultraviolet radiation are definite causes of cancer, alongside tobacco, the hepatitis B virus and chimney sweeping, among others.

DR Congo ring may be giant 'impact crater'

Deforestation has revealed what could be a giant impact crater in Central Africa, scientists say.

The 36-46km-wide feature, identified in DR Congo, may be one of the largest such structures discovered in the last decade.

Italian researchers considered other origins for the ring, but say these are unlikely.

They presented their findings at the recent Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in Texas, US.

The ring shape is clearly visible in the satellite image by TerraMetrics Inc reproduced on this page.

Only about 25 terrestrial impact craters are of comparable size or larger, according to the web-based Earth Impact Database.

Giovanni Monegato, from the University of Padova, said the feature was revealed only after trees were cleared from the area over the last decade.

The Unia River flows around the ring structure, underlining its round shape. The central part of the Wembo-Nyama feature is irregular and about 550m in elevation.

This is about 50-60m higher than the depression where the river flows. Although this might sound counter-intuitive, experts say that impact craters can sometimes lift up dense rocks. The surrounding rocks may subsequently erode, leaving a dome.

Other large impact craters include:
Vredefort: S Africa, 300km-wide, 2 billion years old
Sudbury: Canada, 250km-wide, 1.8 billion years old
Chicxulub: Mexico, 170km-wide, 65 million years old
Popigai: Russia, 100km-wide, 35.7 million years old
Manicouagan: Canada, 100km-wide, 214 million years old

Bode Miller wins first Olympic gold medal

(CNN) -- Bode Miller fulfilled his Olympic dream at last with a gold medal in the men's super-combined at Whistler Creekside on Sunday.

The flamboyant U.S star has been in superb form at the Vancouver Winter Games and his victory completes a full set of medals, after he claimed silver in the super-G and bronze in the downhill.

Miller, seventh after the downhill section, relegated pre-race favorite Ivica Kostelic of Croatia to the silver medal position after producing a superb slalom run.

Silvan Zurbriggen of Switzerland claimed the bronze medal ahead of teammate Carlo Janka, with reigning Olympic Ted Ligety of the United States back in fifth.

Super-G gold medalist Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal, quickest on the downhill, slid out near the finish to spark scenes of wild celebration as Miller realized the gold was his after drawing blank in the 2006 Winter Games in Turin.

Miller, who snubbed the official U.S. ski team in 2007 and appeared on the brink of retirement, returned to the fold last year and prepared carefully for the Games.

He added to his two silvers from Salt Lake City in his first two events and finally made his breakthrough with another virtuoso display.

"When I passed the line I did my normal thing and stood for a second and I was like, 'that was unbelievable, I can't ask for anything more'," Miller told reporters.

"For my first Olympic gold, it was absolutely perfect."

23 Taken To Hospital In St. Thomas Aquinas CO Incident

DERRY, N.H. -- Fire officials were investigating a carbon monoxide incident at St. Thomas Aquinas School in Derry on Wednesday.

Officials said 23 students and teachers were taken to a hospital. One student and one teacher collapsed when fire officials arrived. Their current condition wasn't known.

Some of those being treated were not showing symptoms, but officials said they had higher than normal levels of carbon monoxide in their systems.

The building was evacuated, and students were moved to a church on the campus. Officials said they isolated the problem to the third floor and were venting the building.

That sucks! I hate to say it though, but the first thing that drew me to this story was the fact that CNN News cited WMUR on its front page

US soldier 'waterboards' daughter

A US soldier has been charged with assault after allegedly waterboarding his four-year-old daughter, police in the state of Washington have said.

Sgt Joshua Tabor dunked the girl's head in a sink full of water for not reciting the alphabet, police in the town of Yelm said.

Waterboarding is an interrogation technique that simulates drowning and has been banned as torture by the US.

Sgt Tabor is a helicopter repairer who served in Iraq from 2007-08.

Yelm police chief Todd Stancil said Sgt Tabor was arrested on 31 January.

Officers were called after Sgt Tabor was seen walking around his neighborhood holding a Kevlar helmet and threatening to break windows, the police chief added.

The girl was then found hiding in a locked bathroom in the soldier's home, Mr Stancil said on Monday.

Sgt Tabor posted bail of $10,000 (£6,400) on Monday and has been confined to barracks at his base in Washington state.

This is not nice at all... in fact it's horrible, but BBC might be streching just a tad with the inference that this story of abuse can be compared to the military's use of waterboarding to interrogate "terrorists" and other "opponents." On a different note, BBC also ran a story today that gambling can be linked to brain damage. Hmmm...

Haiti man 'survives 28 days under quake rubble'

The family of a Haitian man says he has survived four weeks under rubble since the devastating earthquake that struck on 12 January.

Doctors said the 28-year-old man was dehydrated and wasted. His brother told the BBC someone had given him water during his 27-day ordeal.

The BBC's Matthew Price spoke to the man's mother in the capital Port-au-Prince and said she was very emotional.

The man is being treated at a field hospital at the airport.

More than 150,000 people were killed in the earthquake, with 1.5 million left homeless, but it is estimated less than 140 people were pulled alive from the rubble in Haiti's capital.

Our correspondent says the man's mother broke down while discussing her son's apparent rescue and said she had not seen him since the quake.

The man is thought to have been pulled out from under the rubble of a building in Port-au-Prince on Monday.

Doctors said he was dehydrated and malnourished, and that his condition suggested he had been trapped for a long time.

Dr Dushyantha Jayaweera, of the University of Miami field hospital, told Reuters TV: "It is unusual but not impossible.

"He was quite dehydrated and he was wasted, so there are certain things that suggest that it's true."

Dr Jayaweera described the man's condition as "reasonable".

"He's still sick, he cannot talk to anybody, but we are very optimistic with the condition of the patient."

US missionaries in Haiti charged with child abduction

Haiti has charged 10 US missionaries with child abduction and criminal conspiracy for allegedly trying to smuggle 33 children out of the country.

Haitian officials said their cases would now be sent to an investigating judge who would decide how to proceed.

If convicted they face lengthy jail terms, says the BBC's Paul Adams, in Haiti's quake-hit capital city.

When stopped on the border last Friday, they said they were taking the children to a Dominican Republic orphanage.

But it has emerged some of the youngsters had parents who were alive.

After the hearing the 10 missionaries were taken back to the jail where they have been kept since Friday.

What the heck where these people thinking? Even if I give them the benefit of the doubt that they were thinking in the best interest of the children, kidnapping is kidnapping. Read the rest of the BBC News article here

I've been following this story since Morgan Harrington went missing in October of 2009 outside of a Metallica concert. It really struck me when I heard about it for some reason. Today I went to her parents' website, findmorgan.com, to see if any new information had been posted, and found that last week police identified her body close to where she was last seen. How tragic. I'm not sure why I have been following this story in particular, as people unfortunately go missing all of the time, but I was really hoping for a happy ending to Morgan's disappearance. I guess the one good thing is her parents, family, and friends now have some peace of mind.

Never thought Urban Dictionary would be so nice to me...

So I looked my name up on urbandictionary.com and this is what came up:

Bridget=

An amazingly happy, yet clumsy person, who is so nice and is always helpful to cheer up everyone else.
I need a Bridget. (in example of needing the happiness)
You pulled a Bridget. (in example of the clumsiness)

A woman more entrancing than the greatest laser show at a European Night Club and a woman who could make the darkest day brighter than the sun. Women who try to imitate this woman pitifully fail - mostly because its like trying to imitate the most beautiful celestial body in the universe with the personality of Princess Charming.
Man, I tried to imitate Bridget today and I couldn't...

hottest girl alive. guys, you know you want her. the most beautiful, and a lovely dancer. she can act, she can sing, she is perfect all around, inside and out, but she is very down to earth and can brighten up anyones day. she is also, quite a prankster and can do many bad things without getting caught. she is amazing. bridget is very charming and can get you do do what ever she wants through her charm
has fairy-like qualities and is really good with animals. one of a kind.
Wow, I cant stand it. I wish bridget liked me.

but isnt she your best friend? i mean goh your so lucky!

yeah but im in love with her.

One of the nicest people you will ever meet! Loved by all, unless envied because of their perfection. A Bridget is overwhelmed by friends, for they are too cool. But usually a Bridget's best friend is a Nicole, becuase of obvious reasons. A Bridget is fun, crazy, smart, pretty, and loves animals! A Bridget is the the ultimate cool!
That girl just helped an old lady, what a Bridget!

Damn, look at that grade, you're so a Bridget!

I wish I could be cool like a Bridget!

A bitch, but a loveable and funny one. She can always brighten up your day with those funny remarks and insults.

When Chocolate and Chakras Collide

Sign me up for this...

The words of Ziggy Marley’s “Love Is My Religion” floated over 30 people lying on yoga mats in a steamy, dim loft above Madison Avenue on Friday. All had signed up for a strange new hybrid of physical activity: first an hour of vigorous, sweaty yoga, then a multicourse dinner of pasta, red wine and chocolate. As soon as the lights went up, dinner was served on the floor: an (almost) seamless transition designed to allow the yogis to taste, smell and digest in a heightened state of awareness.

“It’s a little weird to sit on a sweaty yoga mat and eat soup,” said one woman, not pausing as she spooned up a smooth, cinnamon-spiked butternut squash purée from a bamboo bowl. “But people are used to doing some weird things in yoga class.”

I love this song. This version is from Lhasa de Sela, who recently passed away from breast cancer. Her songs are in English, Spanish, and French... she was born in the US, raised in Mexico, and lived in Montreal and France. Pretty radical.

Haiti rescuers pull man alive from rubble after 11 days

A 23-year-old man has been pulled alive from the rubble of a ruined hotel in Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince, 11 days after the earthquake.

His rescue came as the official search for earthquake survivors in the country was declared over.

He was carried on a stretcher from the Napoli Inn Hotel.

Haitians and rescuers cheered as the man, seen to be smiling, was taken towards a waiting ambulance, the BBC's Adam Mynott reports from the scene.

Earlier, Haiti's government said search-and-rescue operations had ended.

UN spokeswoman Elizabeth Byrs in Geneva said the decision was "heartbreaking" but that it had been taken on the advice of experts.

She said most search-and-rescue teams would now be leaving Haiti, although some with heavy lifting equipment might stay to help with the clean-up operation and with aid distribution.

Rescuers said the man found on Saturday appeared to be in good condition, but was thirsty.

Temple to cat god found in Egypt

Archaeologists in Egypt have discovered a 2,000-year-old temple in Alexandria dedicated to a cat goddess.

The temple is the first trace of the royal quarters of the Ptolemaic dynasty to be revealed in Alexandria.

The find confirms the Greek dynasty of Egyptians continued the worship of ancient animal deities.

Many more ruins of the ancient capital of Hellenic Egypt lie preserved under the modern city, yet to be unearthed, archaeologists say.

The temple, discovered in the Kom el-Dekkah neighbourhood of the city, is believed to belong to Queen Berenike II, wife of Ptolemy III who ruled Egypt in the third century BC, Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities has said.

Ew.

I hate to give this girl more attention because that's ultimately what she strives for... but I just don't get it. PINE CITY, Minn. - Police credit a 15-year-old German Shorthaired dog, Effie, with saving the life of an elderly, unconscious man in Pine City.

Brett Grinde said he took Effie out for their usual walk on Monday evening, but within a couple of minutes she started pulling on the leash, wanting to go in a different direction.

Effie then took off running, leading Grinde to a neighbor's house where a 94-year-old man was face down on the driveway. The dog started licking the man's face. Grinde called 911, then started CPR.

As relief efforts ramp up, mass grave found outside Haitian capital
Port-au-Prince, Haiti (CNN) -- As Haitians drew close to the critical 72-hour mark after a devastating 7.0-magnitude earthquake, a sign of their desperation -- a mass grave serving as possibly the final resting place of scores of victims -- was discovered Friday outside Port-au-Prince.

At least 100 bodies were discovered by a CNN crew in one open pit outside the capital city, with several other pits half-filled or completely covered over with earth, presumably full. Survivors of the quake brought bodies to the site on plywood, wrapped in cloth, by dump trucks and, in one case, an old refrigerator. The stench of death overwhelmed the city.

Elsewhere, bodies were being shoved into old crypts in the city's existing cemeteries.

Haiti's Minister of Civil Protection said Friday that the government estimates more than 50,000 people were killed, with the number possibly closer to 100,000. There is not yet an official count of the dead from Tuesday's earthquake

More Than 100 Neglected Animals Found at Nevada Farm

In one of the worst cases they can remember, Nevada agriculture officials have cited a woman for animal cruelty for neglecting more than 100 barnyard animals, including 35 starving horses and a goat that died from eating wool off a sheep carcass.

Jan Lemley of Battle Mountain faces 42 counts of animal cruelty. Each count carries a civil fine of $1,000, said Nevada Department of Agriculture spokesman Ed Foster.

Lemley did not immediately return a telephone call from The Associated Press on Wednesday. She told The Battle Mountain Bugle, which first reported the incident, that her attorney had advised her not to comment.

It was not immediately clear if any criminal charges would be filed.

Lander County Sheriff Ron Unger said two of the horses, three llamas, three goats and two sheep died at the rural property in Battle Mountain about 220 miles east of Reno.

Foster said a state veterinarian became physically ill upon arrival at the scene last weekend.

"It's the worst case of animal cruelty they've ever witnessed," Foster told The Associated Press on Wednesday. "It's really sad."

Haiti earthquake: Thousands feared dead
Haitian President Rene Preval has said thousands of people are feared dead following a huge quake which has devastated the country's capital.

UN chief Ban Ki-moon said the head of the UN mission in Haiti and his deputy were among more than 100 staff missing.

The 7.0-magnitude quake, Haiti's worst in two centuries, struck south of Port-au-Prince, on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive told US network CNN he believed more than 100,000 people had died.

The Red Cross says up to three million people are affected.

The capital's Catholic archbishop, Monsignor Joseph Serge Miot, is among those reported killed.

In his first interview since the earthquake, President Preval told the Miami Herald newspaper in the US he feared thousands of his people had died.

Describing the scene in the capital as "unimaginable", he said: "Parliament has collapsed. The tax office has collapsed. Schools have collapsed. Hospitals have collapsed."

O Contraire, Booty Beat

Having a big bum, hips and thighs 'is healthy'

Carrying extra weight on your hips, bum and thighs is good for your health, protecting against heart and metabolic problems, UK experts have said.

Hip fat mops up harmful fatty acids and contains an anti-inflammatory agent that stops arteries clogging, they say.

Big behinds are preferable to extra fat around the waistline, which gives no such protection, the Oxford team said.

Science could look to deliberately increase hip fat, they told the International Journal of Obesity.

And in the future, doctors might prescribe ways to redistribute body fat to the hips to protect against cardiovascular and metabolic diseases such as diabetes.

The researchers said having too little fat around the hips can lead to serious metabolic problems, as occurs in Cushing's syndrome.

Shape not weight

Evidence shows that fat around the thighs and backside is harder to shift than fat around the waist.

Although this may sound undesirable, it is actually beneficial because when fat is broken down quickly it releases a lot of cytokines which trigger inflammation in the body, say experts.

These cytokines have been linked to cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance and diabetes.

The slower burning hip fat also makes more of the hormone adiponectin that protects the arteries and promotes better blood sugar control and fat burning.

In comparison, carrying excess fat around the stomach, being "apple shaped", raises the risk of diabetes and heart disease.

Lead researcher Dr Konstantinos Manolopoulos, of Oxford University, said: "It is shape that matters and where the fat gathers.

"Fat around the hips and thighs is good for you but around the tummy is bad."

He said in an ideal world, the more fat around the thighs the better - as long as the tummy stays slim.

"Unfortunately, you tend not to get one without the other," he said.

Fotini Rozakeas of the British Heart Foundation said: "This research helps us better to understand how fat acts in the body in order to develop new approaches in reducing heart and circulatory disease.

"If you are overweight, obese, or if you have a waist size that is increased, it is important to make changes to your lifestyle, such as eating a healthy diet and doing regular physical activity, to reduce your risk of heart health problems."

Interesting...

3D TV is being billed as a possible saviour for recession hit manufacturers looking to boost sales.

On the opening day of the Consumer Electronics Show, CES, in Las Vegas, all the big names unveiled 3D TV's.

Industry experts said the picture looks promising with a survey showing around 3.4m 3D TV sets will be sold in the US this year.

"It's a challenging market. We need something to kick us out of this," said Panasonic's Elsuke Tsuyuzaki.

"To me, the thing that's going to get us there is 3D," added the firm's chief technology officer.

"2009 is a year none of us want to repeat," said Gary Shapiro the president of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) which hosts the annual tech gathering.

The association has predicted that for the coming year the whole consumer electronics industry should eke out a slight revenue increase of 0.3%. The rise of $440m (£280m) will take expected revenues to $165.3bn (£105bn)

However Mr Shapiro noted that lower average selling prices for TVs will be a drag. CEA expects TV revenues to decline 2% in this sector to $22.1bn (£14bn) even though unit sales will go up 5% to 37.7m (£24m)

Cocaine cargo hidden in bananas reaches shops in Spain

Police were alerted after a shelf-stacker at a Lidl supermarket in Madrid found a brick of neatly wrapped cocaine under a bunch of the fruit on Saturday.

Searching other Lidl shops, police sniffer dogs reportedly found 25 such packets, worth several million euros.

The fruit had been shipped in from Ecuador and Ivory Coast.

Reports suggest an error by drug smugglers had led to their failing to retrieve almost 80kg (175lb) of cocaine from the boxes before they were distributed. Police said the drug packets had not made it onto supermarket shelves.

Meanwhile, Dutch police arrested five men and seized more than a tonne of cocaine hidden in a shipment of whisky from Jamaica.

With a street value of some 30m euros, the 1,100kg of cocaine was the largest Dutch seizure of drugs from the Caribbean island, Reuters reported.

The plantain bananas had arrived at a Madrid wholesale fruit and vegetable market from the south-east port of Sagunto last week, destined for supermarkets in the Madrid area.

Bananas were removed from shelves of the Lidl supermarkets in the capital, and a tonne of the fruit had been destroyed, said a spokesman for the German company.

"It's the first time that this has happened to Lidl in Spain - and we hope it's also the last," he told the BBC.

A police investigation into the find has spread from the capital to the eastern Caceres region.

The discovery comes weeks after police discovered 228kg of cocaine hidden in banana boxes shipped into Sagunto.

Last year Spanish police seized more than 14 tonnes of cocaine, which had been smuggled into the country in stuffed animals, nappies, seafood and, in one instance, a picture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Remains of more than 500 animals found at Philadelphia home

(CNN) -- Investigators recovered the remains of more than 500 animals after executing a search warrant Wednesday at a home in the Feltonville section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, according to the city's chapter of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The group's director of law enforcement said he believes the animals -- the majority of which were chickens -- were sacrificed as part of a Santeria religious ritual. The animals included "dozens of sheep, goats ... every type of farm animal you can think of," the Philadelphia SPCA's law enforcement director, George Bengal, said. The SPCA believes two sets of remains are those of small primates, possibly monkeys.

Philadelphia SPCA enforcement officers were first called to the home over the weekend to tend to two emaciated dogs. The organization said that after obtaining a search warrant, its officers found the home littered with animal remains. The officers also found an AK-47, ammunition, dozens of knives and an altar with candles, the group said. Philadelphia police were called after that, and Wednesday's search resulted. The dogs were dirty and malnourished. They were put in protective custody after medical evaluation and treatment, the Philadelphia SPCA said. Bengal said that the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that rituals of Santeria -- a religion similar to voodoo and originated in Cuba and Brazil -- are permitted under the Constitution. But he believes these animals may not have been sacrificed humanely. If that is the case, the home's owner could be prosecuted, he said. "It's a gray area ... a fine line," Bengal said.

The home's owner hasn't been seen for eight months but is believed to be in Mexico, Bengal said. A woman living at the home was last seen there five days ago and is believed to still be in the Philadelphia area, Bengal said. The only rooms of the three-bedroom home without bones were the master bedroom and the bathroom, according to Bengal. Animal sacrifices in Santeria rituals are common in Philadelphia, but this case stands out because of the number and condition of the animals involved, Bengal said. "This place was incredible," he said.

Nasa's Kepler planet-hunter detects five worlds

Nasa's Kepler Space Telescope has detected its first five exoplanets, or planets beyond our Solar System.

The observatory, which was launched last year to find other Earths, made the discoveries in its first few weeks of science operations.

Although the new worlds are all bigger than our Neptune, the US space agency says the haul shows the telescope is working well and is very sensitive.

The exoplanets have been given the names Kepler 4b, 5b, 6b, 7b and 8b.

They were announced at an American Astronomical Society meeting in Washington DC.

The planets range in size from an object that has a radius four times that of Earth, to worlds much bigger than even our Jupiter.

I bet this telescope will find tons of life-sustaining planets in the future. I can't tell if this scares me more than it intrigues me.

I'm not so sure about online dating...

BeautifulPeople.com axes holiday weight gain members

Dating and social network site BeautifulPeople.com has axed some 5,000 members following complaints that they had gained weight.

The members were singled out after posting pictures of themselves that reportedly showed they had put on pounds over the holiday period.

The site allows entry to new members only if existing members vote them as sufficiently attractive to warrant it.

The US, the UK, and Canada topped the list of excluded members.

The site has always been unrepentant about its selection process, calling itself "the largest network of attractive people in the world".

The move was reportedly prompted by members themselves, who police the membership of the site to maintain a high - if highly subjective - standard of attractiveness.

"As a business, we mourn the loss of any member, but the fact remains that our members demand the high standard of beauty be upheld," said site founder Robert Hintze.

"Letting fatties roam the site is a direct threat to our business model and the very concept for which BeautifulPeople.com was founded."
